About 90 minutes by plane from Kyushu, Okinawa is an area where they have a culture very different from the main islands. The islands have a unique culture stemmed from the time when it was an independent state named the Ryukyu Kingdom. Okinawa is surrounded by beautiful cobalt blue sea, and now boasts tremendous popularity as a sightseeing and resort destination for many tourists from home and abroad. Since public transport is less convenient here than the mainland, and tourist spots are scattered all over the island, renting one of our charter vehicles or charter buses is highly recommended. The scenery along the coast is striking so please take in the view from your private vehicle.
Firstly, we will head to the World Heritage listed Shuri Castle, which is also known as a symbol of Okinawa. The Shuri Castle used to be the center of politics, culture and diplomacy of the Ryukyu Kingdom that prospered between 15-19th century, and you will be stunned by its unique walls and buildings that span the vast castle site. Let’s take a memorial photo at the Shurei-mon entrance gate. Cape Manzamo, which is less than an hour drive away from Shuri castle, is a scenic sightseeing location with rocks that look like an elephant’s nose. The contrast of the blue sky and the ocean and the green grass on top of the cliff is breathtakingly beautiful that you must see to believe. If the weather is clear, Iejima can be seen in the distance.
For lunch, why not try some traditional Okinawan cuisine, such as Okinawa Soba (Soki Soba), Rafute (pork) and Goya dishes (only for those with tolerance to bitter melons). In the afternoon, we will head to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium which everyone from any generation will enjoy. Many rare fish species such as whale sharks, manta rays and various deep-sea creatures can be viewed within this spectacular aquarium. The aquarium is popular not only among tourists, but many researchers also visit this full-scale maritime museum. There are a wide range of shops and cafes in the aquarium, so you can also take a break and shop while you are here.
In Okinawa, you can swim at the beach between June to October and participate in other activities, so please send us a request if you are interested.
