9 Hours Service
Koyasan (Mount Koya) is a World Heritage site and one of Japan’s biggest Buddhist settlements. It is a sacred place where monks of Shingon sect train and it was forbidden for women to enter the settlement in the past. Nowadays, many Japanese and foreign tourists visit this site. Although it is about two hours by road from Osaka, it is more convenient to hire our charter vehicle or charter bus because public buses are often crowded. As you will be walking along mountain roads, it is recommended that you wear casual clothes, so you can move easily.
After arrival, we will be walking along the path approaching Okunoin for about 2km. The cedar trees along this path that extend straight towards the sky are quite stunning. On the approach to Okunoin, you see many uniquely shaped tombstones erected by notable Japanese companies, as well as tombs of famous samurai warlords. As you go along Okunoin, you will find one of the main tourist spots at Koyasan, the mausoleum of the founder of Shingon sect Kukai (Kobo-Daishi). The temple area is considered sacred and photography is forbidden. You do feel the sacred atmosphere when you look up at the stunning rows of lanterns hanging from the ceiling. If you’re lucky, you may be able to encounter the monks chanting the sutra.
For lunch, let’s try Shojin (Buddhist) dishes that the monks eat daily. These dishes only use vegetables and are very healthy but looks beautiful and are very popular among tourists. In the afternoon, we will head to Koyasan’s head-temple, Kongobu-ji Temple. There’s a spectacular main shrine with fusuma paintings of high cultural value and one of the largest stone gardens in Japan. Since we will be walking around the whole day, it will more convenient to rent one of our charter vehicles as you will be able to rest on the way back to the hotel. If you get tired of walking during the day, you won’t have any issues trying to find a place to rest.
